MMA Fighter Taila Santos Addresses Steroid Case

Brazilian mixed martial artist Taila Santos recently opened up about the doping case that led to a six-month suspension and temporarily halted her momentum in the sport. The situation drew attention not only because of the substances involved, but also because of the explanation Santos gave for how they entered her system.

Santos had been scheduled to face Juliana Velasquez, but that matchup fell apart after she tested positive in March 2025 for oxandrolone and clenbuterol. Both substances are prohibited under anti-doping rules, and the positive test forced Santos out of competition at a crucial point in her career.

However, Santos later claimed the incident happened by mistake. According to her, the problem stemmed from a mix-up involving her husband’s supplements.

“My husband is a bodybuilder, so he uses anabolic steroids,” Santos explained. “We were rushing to go train, and we get all our compounded supplements from the same place. In the rush, I ended up taking one of his by mistake.”

Her explanation quickly became one of the more unusual doping defenses in recent MMA news. Before returning to competition, Santos addressed the situation in an interview with MMA Fighting, saying the failed test was due to accidentally taking a product intended for her husband.

Taila Santos Returns After Steroid Mix-Up Suspension

According to USADA, Santos’ sample did not contain only trace or negligible amounts of banned substances. Instead, testing detected oxandrolone, clenbuterol, and related metabolites from samples collected around her March 21, 2025, fight.

That finding mattered because both oxandrolone and clenbuterol fall under prohibited categories for PFL athletes. Oxandrolone is an anabolic steroid, while clenbuterol is often associated with performance enhancement and cutting. As a result, Santos violated the PFL Anti-Doping Policy and received a six-month suspension.

Although any doping violation can seriously damage a fighter’s reputation, Santos received a relatively short penalty. The length of the suspension suggested that the anti-doping authorities may have taken into account the circumstances of her case, including her claim that the ingestion was unintentional. In other words, officials appeared to accept that there may have been a reasonable explanation, even though the violation still stood.

Before joining the PFL, Santos had already built a strong reputation in MMA. She previously competed in the UFC and challenged some of the best fighters in her division. Her move to the PFL gave her another major platform, but the failed test interrupted her plans and removed her from the tournament path.

Santos was originally expected to face Juliana Velasquez in the PFL quarterfinals. However, after the positive test, she lost that opportunity. The suspension also came after a difficult result in the 2024 PFL Women’s Flyweight Championship final, where she suffered a TKO loss to Dakota Ditcheva, one of the promotion’s rising stars.

Still, Santos did not take long to remind fans why she remains a dangerous contender. After serving her suspension, she returned to action at PFL Sioux Falls on May 2, 2026, and delivered a statement performance against Qihui Yan.

Santos finished the fight dominantly. She landed a damaging body kick, followed up with strikes, and secured the victory in just two minutes. The win marked an important comeback moment for Santos, especially because she had not competed since November 2024.

With that performance, Santos improved her professional record to 23 wins and 4 losses. More importantly, she returned to the winners’ circle after a turbulent stretch that included a championship loss, a failed drug test, a suspension, and public scrutiny over her explanation.

At this point, Taila Santos has not only returned to competition; she has also reentered the conversation in the women’s flyweight division. Her explanation for the steroid mix-up may continue to spark debate among MMA fans, but her comeback win showed she remains a serious threat inside the cage.
